Порядок слів в англійському реченні
The most common order of words in sentences is as follows:
Subject + Verb/Predicate + Object
Підмет + присудок + додаток
Examples:
- John goes to school.
- They write stories.
ATTENTION!
Do not split the verb forms in English.
Example:
- I can speak French. (NOT: I can French speak)
Sometimes we can have sentences with two objects. The indirect object follows the direct object when it is formed with the preposition to. The indirect object comes in front of the direct object if to is omitted.
- непрямий дод. (Кому?) + прямий (Що?)
She wrote her friend a letter. (Вона написала подрузі лист.)
- прямий дод. (Що?) + з прийменником to + непрямий (Кому?)
She wrote a letter to her friend. (Вона написала лист подрузі.)
Adverbs of frequency.
Adverbs of frequency such as always, usually, seldom, often, never, etc. generally go before the verb.
Examples:
- Sue often goes swimming.
- He always reads newspaper in the morning.
However, with the verb to be, they go after the verb.
Examples:
- They are never late.
- She is always busy.
They can also go between two verbs.
Examples:
- They will always remember their schoolmates.
- She has never been to London.
- I can never forget her.
Subject + Verb + Object + Manner + Place + Time
Examples:
- We study French well at school every day.
- They were running quickly to their house at 7 o'clock yesterday.
Usually they come one by one, but sometimes they can be in three different places: before the subject, after the object, after the verb. If you need to unerline the adverbs of place and time you can write them at the begining of your sentence.
Examples:
- In London he visited many interesting places last year.
- Last year he visited many interesting places in London.
Writing English sentence we have to remember about adjectives because sometimes we need to use more than one adjective in front of a noun. So, adjectives usually come in this order:
General opinion + Specific opinion + Size + Shape + Age + Colour + Nationality + Material
Examples:
- He was a nice intelligent young man.
- She had a small round black wooden box
There are also some extensions but we talk about it later.
